The 100th Street Calumet River site historically has served as he location of a collection of utility production and distribution operations. There is no legal public access along the Calumet River because the area of the Calumet Industrial Corridor’s industrial zoning. As one of the first public access points along the river, the site has the opportunity to be a catalyst for a cleaner and more natural river. To achieve these aims, project partners are collaborating the facilitate a community participatory planning process that is dedicated to the developing community stewardship of the Calumet River site. The project team will be working with private owners of the site to develop a plan for public access.

The project builds on the synergy of the Calumet Connect Initiative, which aims to unite stakeholders in shaping the future of the Calumet River region, including residents, businesses, and community organizations. This includes the Land use Study for the Calumet Industrial Corridor and the environmental assessment of the Schroud Property Superfund site. The primary goal of these projects is to bring revitalization to the Calumet Region through redevelopment that addresses the harms of the past and injustices that residents have been subjected to as a result of historically racist and corrupt zoning and land use practices.
